In looking at these pictures, what do you see? A gentle lamb or could it be a fearless lion cub. I introduce Seth Shakespear Romeo: The breed originated from the Saint Bernard and the Bermese Mountain Dog. The English Mastiff is the original breed of the ancient Mastiff which existed in Britain resembling the vast Bulldog and crossed with the Tibetan Mastiff of today. The English Mastiff; in Ancient times were used in arena's to fight in barbaric sports. The breed was provoked to act fearless and vicious, they would fight lions till the death. In Medieval times the Mastiffs were used for hunting dogs and guardians, however by in World War II, the breed was nearly destroyed. In 1835 the breed would become known as fearless.
Today, the Mastiff proceeds to amaze many people with their high intelligence and the great desire in life; is to please those they love. "Their Families." It is said The English Mastiff is one of the oldest and most powerful of its day. The breed is described as being vast, stubborn, eager, heavy in body with little swiftness and is suspicious. The Mastiff is laid back, calm, pleasing, loyal, and totally devoted to their families, they are alert and do not tend to bark senselessly . The breed is extremely effectionate and great with small children. It is said the Mastiffs courage doesn't exceed his temper. They are extremely carefree even when small children tease or pull pranks on them. Despite their size the Mastiff will not harbor feelings of resentment. They are highly sensitive and will show feelings of being sorry for any wrong doings they may have caused or done. Because of this no harsh actions are required when settling a dispute. The tone of one's voice is all that is necessary.Though the breed can be indifferent to outsiders, they will show a positive expression in greeting any stranger.
Throughout the Mastiffs years the breed has accomplished great nobility, a breed who could fight like a lion though instead is as gentle as a lamb.
Remember owning a mastiff is a privilege, we only receive what we put into our relationship with any breed. Keep in mind any breed that is not properly socialized could be a recipe for disaster.
CRUELTY TO ANIMALS IS AGAINST THE LAW
In 1999 I was very fortunate to be a proud parent of my 1st English Mastiff, not realizing at the time I would end up adoring this magnificant Gentle Giant.During this time I wrote a college thesis and it went as follows:
